You can connect as many computers, tablets, laptops, and smartphones as you want.
Just remember that every device connected will slow your speed a little bit as the modem works harder to deliver broadband to each device.
If you connect too many devices, your broadband won’t work very well.

Absolutely! If you have your own modem then you might be able to use it for your HotShot broadband instead of buying a new one from us. It depends on the type of router you have, and if it’s compatible with fibre connection.

Different connection technologies like Fibre have different technical requirements. Search the internet for your current modem, model number and firmware version to find its technical specifications or consult the user manual if you still have it to hand. Then use this spec sheet to ensure your modem meets the technical requirements for your new HotShot broadband connection.

Remember that whilst we are very familiar with our own HotShot supplied routers, our ability to support 3rd party modems is limited and on a best efforts basis. We recommend choosing the HotShot modem if you’re not sure, plus we’ll pre-configure it for you.

If your router was originally provided by another Internet Service Provider, then they may have applied some restrictions that make it difficult for the router to be used elsewhere.

Below are the basic requirements for the modem used for fibre connection:

  • Fibre Capable Modem
  • Encapsulation Protocol: PPPoE
  • Ethernet WAN Port (Gigabit rating recommended)

Generic Settings for HotShot fibre connection:

  • Connection Type: PPPoE
  • Username: HotShotFibre
  • Passowrd: UrDa8est
  • VLAN Tagging: For customers who joined before 01/06/2020 please use Untagged (if you are in Auckland) or 10 (if you are outside Auckland); For customers who joined after 01/06/2020 please use Untagged no matter where you are.
  • Vlan Priority: 0
  • MTU: 1492
  • MSS: 1452
  • DNS: Dynamic

We have also prepared specific guides for some commonly used routers for your convenience. We will keep adding more to the list. So please do let us know if you couldn’t find your router here.

  • If you still have problems regarding your own modem, feel free to email us at service@hotshot.nz or message us here.
  • Kindly be aware that our support for personal modem configurations is limited, and we cannot guarantee comprehensive assistance with configuring your own modem. For modem-related terms and conditions, please refer to our terms and conditions available in clause 8 found here.

WiFi works using radio waves. Anything that emits or gets in the way of radio waves – for example, TVs, microwaves, other routers, cordless phones, thick or metal walls – can interfere with your WiFi connection. For the best results, place your modem carefully. Make sure there are as few walls as possible between your devices and your router. Don’t put your router with other electronics like your TV. Give it its own special, privileged spot high on a shelf. Also, if you can, try and place it somewhere in your house that is closer to where you like to use the internet. Either in the middle of your house, or, if you like doing a lot of streaming to a big screen (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?) then place it in a good spot with line of sight to your streaming device.

Change the frequency. Up until recently, every WiFi enabled device used the 2.4 gigahertz frequency. However today, most WiFi devices can make use of 5 gigahertz frequencies – and so they should. 5 GHz is almost always better. Your HotShot Broadband modem broadcasts at both! Wow!

Make sure your network is secure. If you haven’t set up a wireless password for your WiFi network, do it. DO IT NOW. Why? If you have an open wireless network, everyone can use it. “But I’ve got unlimited broadband, why should I care?!” you ask. Well, if there are a bunch of strangers using your WiFi, it can make your connection really slow. Set up a username and password for your WiFi network. Make it a good one. Or your connection will be terrible.

Whenever possible, don’t use WiFi. We get it – WiFi is convenient. But it’s also a huge pain, because it’s just radio waves, it’s vulnerable to interference from a lot of things, everything from other WiFi users to your microwave. Whenever you have a device that can accept a wired (Ethernet) connection from your router – PCs, game consoles, many laptops – use it. It’s nearly always faster and more reliable than WiFi.

Check that you have power and that the power cable is plugged in correctly to your modem.

Yes you can, however no one will be able to connect while this is turned off.
